Was "Squid Game" Based on a True Story? Exploring the Real-Life Inspirations Behind the Show

Exploring the Inspirations Behind 'Squid Game'

"Squid Game," the South Korean series that captivated global audiences, is a work of fiction. However, its creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, drew inspiration from real-life events and societal issues to craft its compelling narrative.

Inspiration from the 2009 SsangYong Motor Strike

A significant influence on "Squid Game" was the 2009 SsangYong Motor labor strike in South Korea. During this period, over 2,600 workers were laid off, leading to a 77-day occupation of the factory. The protest escalated into violent clashes between strikers and riot police, resulting in numerous injuries and long-term repercussions for the workers involved. Hwang Dong-hyuk has mentioned that the experiences of the main character, Gi-hun—a laid-off worker—were inspired by these events.

Reflection of Personal Struggles and Economic Disparities

Hwang's personal experiences during the late 2000s also shaped the series. Facing financial difficulties, he spent time in manhwabang (comic cafes) reading Japanese survival manga, which influenced the show's survival-game concept. This period of economic instability in South Korea, marked by rising debt and unemployment, is mirrored in the desperate situations of the show's characters.

Symbolism of Childhood Games

The series features traditional Korean children's games, such as the titular "Squid Game," "Red Light, Green Light," and the dalgona candy challenge. Hwang chose these games for their simplicity and familiarity, using them metaphorically to critique the competitive nature of modern society. The juxtaposition of innocent games with deadly stakes highlights the extremes individuals might reach when faced with financial desperation.

Conclusion

While "Squid Game" is not based on a true story, its roots in real events and societal issues lend it a sense of realism and relatability. The series serves as a commentary on economic disparity, personal desperation, and the lengths to which people might go to escape their circumstances.
